Announcements:

P. Duk. inv. 767The ASP was founded in 1961 to further the study of ancient Greek and Latin papyri and of the materials contained in them. The Society supports and encourages research in the field, the teaching of the discipline, and international cooperation by scholars in the field.

The ASP publishes The Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists (BASP), the only North American journal in the field of papyrology. It also publishes a monograph series, American Studies in Papyrology, and occasional supplements to BASP.

The ASP holds its Annual Meeting in conjunction with the APA/AIA Annual Meeting; the Annual Meeting features speakers as well as the election of officers and other business
. As part of the Annual Meeting, the ASP sponsors a panel of about five papers on a wide range of subjects within the field of papyrology. The ASP also now sponsors a continuing panel on "Papyrology and Early Christian Backgrounds" at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Under ASP sponsorship, a consortium of ten universities is hosting a series of intensive summer institutes in papyrology for each of the ten summers from 2003 to 2112. Aimed at advanced graduate students and younger faculty in relevant fields, including Classics, Ancient History, Egyptology, Archaeology, Ancient Religions, and Biblical Studies, the institutes provide participants with sufficient instruction and practical experience to enable them to make productive use of texts on papyrus in their research and to become active scholars in the field of papyrology. Each seminar has a distinctive linguistic, chronological, or thematic focus, reflecting the interests and available resources of the host institution.
